Window Supply Company breaks the bias

The theme for International Women’s Day this year is #BreakTheBias. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that is diverse, equitable and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. A world where together we can forge women’s equality. A world where collectively we can all #BreakTheBias. Predominantly perceived as a male dominated industry we talk to company Director and member of the WSC board, Fiona Rafferty on her experience in fenestration.

Fiona says ‘When I first came into the sector, I did encounter some minor issues predominantly when dealing with customer complaints. The perception was that as a woman I did not know what I was talking about. However, I made it my mission to understand our products thoroughly and I was always able to hold my own and that earned me a great deal of respect.

Early on in my career, one of my first jobs was selling advertising space for a newspaper. I cut my teeth on the holiday lets section and after I proved myself, I was promoted to the car sales section where ‘the car dealers like to deal with younger ladies’. Only as my career progressed and I reflected on that statement did I understand how wrong it was!

I take inspiration from women who are strong, fearless, and resilient who lead from the front and by example. As a young girl Margaret Thatcher fascinated me, she was my first introduction to ‘girl power’. Love her or hate her, she was a trailblazer for female leadership. In the current climate, I am inspired by the women in Ukraine, who are steadfast in the support of their country in the face of such adversity.

If I could offer any advice, it would be to never be afraid to ask questions. I have asked a huge amount over my career as knowledge is power. Know your product and know your teams. Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself and finally, most importantly, Believe in yourself.'
